Wikipedia
ScholarshipIn a paper. The source I actually use. DBpedia when the structured layer is there, Fandom when Wikipedia’s rules about notability get in the way. Wrestling stables, Coronation Street, telenovelas.
TeachingNot on a timetable yet. A class pulling a community they care about out of Wikipedia, drawing it, and arguing with the picture. I have done it with wrestling fans. I have not put it in a timetable as a Wikipedia session.
Wikipedia is usually where I go for data. It has rules about what is worthy of notice, which is why Fandom showed up for Coronation Street, and why Ric Flair went missing from the wrestling graph: DBpedia did not type him as a wrestler. The gaps are the interesting bit. People who care will beat the machine, then some of them go and fix the source.
Already tied to
- Wrestling. The stables came out of Wikipedia. Reddit then argued with the picture.
- Digital footprints. Open methods on public traces. Wikipedia is one of the places those traces live.
- Soaps. Corrie infoboxes, Fandom when DBpedia was not there, the same habit as the wrestling scrape.
Could be built
- Classroom games. A session that is just: pick a fandom, pull a graph, argue with it. I have done the wrestling version off-timetable.
