Clingo

Clingo is clinical bingo for health students. Instead of numbers you get phrases you might hear on placement. Scan a QR code for a card, someone at the front runs the caller, and when the card is full you shout CLINGO. ScLINGO is the same game with Scouse.

The Clingo caller board: coloured CLINGO title, Auto and Next buttons, and a grid of clinical phrases such as Slept well, Therapeutic alliance, and Suicidal ideation.

International students kept arriving on placement and not knowing the phrases people actually say in a hospital, or the Scouse ones people say in Liverpool. Bingo was already a thing everyone understood, so I swapped the numbers for lingo. Students scan a QR code, get a card, someone at the front runs a caller in a browser, and when the card is full they shout CLINGO. Then you talk about what the phrases mean.

ScLINGO is the same game with Scouse. Making a new set is mostly copy a folder, drop in some recordings, and change the word list. There is a little PHP so the caller and the cards stay in sync, which is handy when you are actually in a room with a class.

There is an ECGBL paper, a Liverpool Learning and Teaching Conference talk and poster, and a page on the CEDS site.

Notes to self for media to add
  • Hero: a bingo caller on a projector and a phone QR card with clinical phrases. Not 7 and 22: things you hear on placement.
  • Screenshots: a filled card; the QR; ScLINGO if it looks different. Not the other games on the hub.
  • Short demo: scan QR → card appears → caller plays a phrase → tick → CLINGO. Then ScLINGO if you want the Scouse version.
  • YouTube Short: “Bingo, but the numbers are things students hear on placement.”
  • Privacy: no student faces, no live session with identifiable people. University branding is fine. GitHub stays off the page.
